Installing UPCOPY as a Non-Windows Application
──────────────────────────────────────────────
This procedure only adds an UPCOPY icon to Windows. You should
perform the DOS installation first to copy the files.
Method 1 - Using Macro Playback
───────────────────────────────
Try this first. Because of slight variations between Windows' systems
it does not always work. Follow method 2 if so.
1. Click on windows macro recorder (usually in applications.)
2. Click on 'File' and specify file UPCOPY.REC in your chosen
installation directory.
3. Click on 'Macro'
4. Click on 'Run'
You can watch the UPCOPY icon being installed. Afterwards if you wish
you can drag the icon to another group.
Method 2 - Manual
─────────────────
It is best to print out these instructions, UPCWIN.DOC, and refer to
them. (Alternatively view the instructions as you follow them, using
'write' in a separate window.) This procedure is a bit illogical,
it's the manual version of the recorder file above. In what follows
you need not normally specify a full UPCOPY pathname, such as
'C:\UTILS\UPCOPY.EXE', just 'UPCOPY.EXE', or even 'UPCOPY', will do.
This is because you have put UPCOPY in a directory that is specified
by the DOS PATH variable - a list of places to look for things, and
appropriate extensions are assumed. You should put all the files in
the same directory.
So, from Program Manager in Windows:
1. Open the window/group where you want the UPCOPY icon to appear
('Applications' or 'Main' perhaps).
2. Click 'File' on the menu line at the top of the screen.
3. In the unlabelled box that appears click on the already
highlighted item 'New'.
4. In the 'New Program Object' box that appears click OK ('Program
Item' is already selected, UPCOPY is not a group).
5. In the 'Program Item Properties' box that appears, in the
'Description' box which is already open, enter the description
'UPCOPY', or whatever. This is the label that appears beneath the
icon.
6. Click on the command line box, and enter command 'UPCOPY'.
7. The 'Working Directory' is the default directory. It's used if
you just use '*.*', or whatever, as a parameter to UPCOPY,
otherwise it's not important. The 'Run Minimised' check box is
already clear as it should be. You can specify a shortcut key if
you like.
8. Now click the 'Change Icon' item on the right. Ignore the very
misleading 'no icons' error message, telling you that you can
Page 1 of 2
choose an icon from those available for 'Program Manager', and
click OK.
9. In the 'Change Icon' box that appears, press 'Delete' to erase
the equally misleading ...\PROGMAN.EXE filename which is
highlighted. Type in 'UPCOPY.ICO' instead. At this point you
should see the new UPCOPY icon (two directories connected by '<-
>'). If not try typing the full pathname, or using Browse.
10. Now Click OK
11. The icon should now appear at bottom left in the box 'Program
Item Properties'. Click OK.
12. You should now see the UPCOPY icon in your chosen group.
To use UPCOPY click on this icon and the UPCOPY menu will appear.
To rectify problems highlight the icon in program manager, click
'File', and then click 'Properties...'. At this point you can also
click 'Delete' and start again (UPCOPY itself is not deleted, only
the Windows information).
You can specify parameters at item 6 (Use the /w option). In this way
you can create several fixed UPCOPY actions each with its own label
or icon. Use a DOS batch file if you want to fix certain parameters
and type in others from Windows. Change the font (!) in the UPCOPY
window to change the window size. For other changes, for example if
you prefer a full DOS screen to a DOS window, you should alter
UPCOPY.PIF using the PIF editor.
If you'd prefer a full Windows version of UPCOPY, then I need your
support to develop it. Register mentioning your requirement - advance
supporters will get the upgrade FREE.
